According to Kentucky state laws, women must wait 24 hours after receiving state-mandated information from an abortion provider before they can terminate a pregnancy. Also, minors (under age 18) must have permission from one parent or a judge to receive services. A post-abortion check-up is very important and should be planned for two to three weeks after the abortion. If planning to visit the Knoxville locations, ask about any requirements that might be different for those obtaining abortion services in Tennessee so you may plan accordingly. Currently, there is no waiting period (24 or more hours required) before obtaining services in Tennesee. Minors must have permission from one parent or a judge to receive services as in Kentucky.
Additional Information: Contact a healthcare provider or the local health department to learn how to prevent future unintended pregnancies, get a pap smear, be tested for sexually transmitted diseases, and learn about options for birth control. You may also want to keep Emergency Contraception (EC) available at home. (EC is now available over the counter for those 18 and older. Check the pharmacy for availability.)
